Dragonfly: Take 2 by Cyberguy64 Dragonfly: Take 2 by Cyberguy64
So, after getting some advice from :icondragondeplatino:, I've spiffed up both The Dragonfly, and my main bots. In addition to fixing the shading to make it look more metallic and better defined, I decided to experiment a bit with anti-aliasing. Like the Mario & Luigi styled sprites, there's a little grey pixel in the outer corners of both The Dragonfly and all four of the bots.

I also tried to add more details, like vents and guns and jets. One thing that I've learned about art is that if you have blank space, you tend to get distracted by it and it messes with your impression of the piece. If you fill it with something, whether shading or some little accesory, it makes it stand out less and improves the overall design.

So, what do you think, now? Comment, let me know.

I like the shading style you've used on the helicopter, especially the blades. That's a very clever use of an old retro technique that is probably largely forgotten by now. I don't mean dithering, but I mean transparent helicopter blades and such done that way. Nicely done.

My only comment is that the helicopter is much more detailed than the characters in colour tone - meaning, your blue character for instance, has roughly two obvious tones, where as the helicopter has 4. Typically the object with the most tones is the one you want to stand out the most. I think it might look better if the game characters at least had white highlights that matched the helicopter - they 'almost' feel like a different style. I prefer the helicopters shading, but it almost looks like it's from another game - that may be less noticeable with a background. I understand you may have done this to simplify for character animation, which is fair enough. So, that's not a comment on doing any bad work, and you may have done it on purpose, it's just something I wanted to mention in case you hadn't thought about it.

It looks great. I would love to see that Dragonfly animated :D

Ooh, how long did this take you? O:

Also, on RCT3, the graphics options mention anti-aliasing. What is that, exactly? It sounds complicated.

Anti-aliasing is when you put little, lighter colors around the edge of a sprite. Gray around black, light blue around dark blue, etc...

As for how long it took me? I don't remember, actually. I didn't do the whole thing in one sitting.

Oh...I see now.

That's rather professional, I think. That takes a trained eye to do.

Oh, okay. It looks amazing, though!
I want to fucking play this game

If all goes well, you should be able to someday. ;)
Original work :)

btw, your preview image is hilarious and I even reckon I prefer it to this, because it's an action shot. Action shots are always interesting :D

Looks nice. The light/shade adjustment is slight but noticable in a way that it makes a good difference.
So how about your friend? did you ask him?
